Does smoking pot honor God

1. The Argument for Sobriety (1 Peter 5:8)
  • The Bible consistently commands us to be 'sober-minded' and 'vigilant' because our adversary the devil is looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8; 1 Peter 1:13). The goal of getting high is to change your mental state, which is the opposite of being sober.
  • Key Principle: The Bible equates being controlled by substances (drunkenness) with being controlled by the flesh rather than the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).
2. The Context of "Every Seed-Bearing Plant" (Genesis 1:29)
  • Genesis 1:29 says God gave plants for food (meat/nourishment), not for intoxication or smoking. Just because God created hemp doesn't mean smoking it to get high is its intended purpose. Poison ivy is also a natural, seed-bearing plant, but we don't treat it as a blessing for consumption.
  • Key Principle: God’s creation is good, but human misuse of that creation (distorting good gifts for selfish pleasure) is a common theme of sin.
3. The "Helpful" and "Mastery" Standard (1 Corinthians 6:12)
  • 1 Corinthians 6:12 says, 'All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.' Even if you argue it's not a sin, is it profitable? Does it make you more productive for the Kingdom, or does it make you complacent?
  • Key Principle: Anything that becomes a crutch or an addiction (a 'master') should be avoided.
4. The Body as a Temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
  • The Bible says your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and you are not your own. We are called to steward our bodies, not to purposefully introduce smoke or mind-altering chemicals that damage our health or impair our ability to think clearly.
  • Key Principle: We are commanded to honor God with our bodies.
5. Obedience to Governing Authorities (Romans 13:1-2)
  • Romans 13 commands believers to submit to the laws of the land. If recreational marijuana is illegal where you live, using it is not just about personal liberty; it is a violation of the governing authority God has established.
  • Key Principle: Obeying the law is a scriptural mandate.
6. The "Stumbling Block" Principle (Romans 14)
  • Even if you believe your conscience allows it, Romans 14 tells us to consider others. If your use causes someone else to stumble, or if it negatively impacts your witness, it is more loving to abstain.
Summary of the Best Argument

Does smoking marijuana help you love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself?"(Matthew 22:37-39). We are to live for God’s glory rather than seeking a high.
