Test Everything With God’s Word
We test and approve everything with God’s Word by measuring all beliefs, teachings, experiences, and impulses against the clear witness of Scripture—not our feelings, culture, or preferences.
1. Scripture is the final authority
God’s Word is the standard by which all truth is judged (2 Timothy 3:16–17; Psalm 119:105). If something contradicts Scripture, it is rejected—no matter how convincing or popular it seems (Isaiah 8:20; Galatians 1:8).
2. Compare, don’t assume
Believers are commanded to examine what they hear, even from trusted teachers (Acts 17:11). Truth welcomes testing; error avoids it (1 John 4:1).
3. Interpret Scripture with Scripture
No idea or experience should be built on isolated verses. God’s Word is coherent and consistent, so unclear passages must be understood in light of clear ones (Luke 24:27; 2 Peter 1:20).
4. Examine the fruit
True teaching aligns with God’s character and produces godly fruit—truth, humility, holiness, and love (Matthew 7:15–20; Galatians 5:22–23).
5. Depend on the Holy Spirit, not emotion
The Spirit who inspired Scripture guides believers into truth, never away from it (John 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:12–14). Spiritual discernment is shaped by the Word, not personal impressions.
6. Obedience confirms understanding
Truth is not merely affirmed intellectually but approved through faithful obedience (Romans 12:2; James 1:22).
In short, we test everything by anchoring ourselves in Scripture, reading it carefully, interpreting it faithfully, relying on the Spirit, and living it out consistently. Anything that cannot withstand that process should not be embraced.
